Mobile Workforce: Microsoft Surface In The Real World

Macfarlanes is a successful London-based law firm. Hoping to develop more digital and agile work practices, it adopted Microsoft Surface Pro 7 devices and deployed Microsoft 365 across the firm. When employees needed to work from home because of COVID-19, Macfarlanes was poised to seamlessly set up and support its entire staff remotely. The firm improved reliability, reduced IT issues, lowered costs, and gained greater control over device management and security – all while continuing to deliver valuable client services without disruption.

In 2020, as people around the world stayed home because of COVID-19 restrictions, Macfarlanes was ready. The firm helped its 850 employees transition to an extended period of remote work for the first time thanks to the portability and functionality of the Surface Pro 7 devices. Far from losing its competitive edge forged over decades in the office, Macfarlanes lawyers were able to continue working effectively.

New Capabilities Unlocked With The Surface Pro 7

In addition to creating new and innovative work practices, Macfarlanes uses Surface Pro 7 devices to free itself from its previous work tools, which were outmoded and costly. The firm uses Microsoft Teams for collaboration and communication and is about to move its telephony to the digital space. In the past, lawyers needed physical telephones on their desks to contact clients, but now Teams Phone is an easy, natural solution to use on the firm’s Surface devices.

Macfarlanes also substantially dropped the costs associated with dictation devices because more staff now use Surface for dictation. The firm has already reduced its dictation software spend by 80 percent. “It’s easy for our staff to speak directly into their Surface Pro 7 devices because the quality of the speakers and the microphone is incredibly high,” says Neil Davison, Chief Technology Officer at Macfarlanes. “As a result, we’ve seen a massive decline in the use of dictation devices and the costs that go with them.”

Additionally, Macfarlanes IT and legal staff both face fewer technical issues, which frees up time for more strategic and innovative work. “Our IT support queue is at an all-time low,” says Davison. “We partly credit that to using Microsoft 365 as our single technology platform that works so well with Surface devices.”

Embracing Digital Transformation With Microsoft Surface In Government

Government agencies can be slower to adopt modern technology than other sectors. If you’re still doing things the way you were a decade ago, you’re missing an opportunity to be more impactful. Embracing digital transformation helps keep people more connected – to each other and to the information they need. You can improve how your teams work together, with other agencies, and intra-agency. This is why Microsoft Surface for government can make the changes you need. Employees can spend less time searching for data by having improved access to their organisation’s knowledge base. Through modern technology, you can empower your employees to break down barriers, work optimally where policies intersect, and ultimately move initiatives forward more effectively.

This can help you:

  • Break down the physical and virtual barriers that slow down communication.
  • Streamline communication and collaboration to maximise your workforce productivity.
  • Make information easier to find and share across agencies, enabling real-time decision making and more immediate results.
  • Ease the burden of time-consuming tasks by accelerating joint initiatives and streamlining workflows through a clearer division of labour and accountabilities.
  • Strike a greater balance between privacy, security, and compliance while giving your workers the freedom to collaborate effectively.

Effective Collaboration With Microsoft Surface In Government

To help achieve your agency’s mission, you need to improve the coordination of efforts internally and across agencies. Policies and programs often touch more than one department, agency, or jurisdiction. However, physical and virtual boundaries between these entities can complicate the flow of information and hinder critical decision making.

Legacy tools and procedures impact your missions, often making information-sharing unnecessarily complex and collaboration cumbersome. By using outdated capabilities, you can cause misalignment between reporting and communication, duplicated work, and less secure environments, which can waste time or compromise data. Challenges can arise from staying connected when working remotely or in the field. Without the right tools, you can experience inefficiencies, including unnecessary travel back and forth to the office to submit reports, audits, or transcribe notes to be saved. This is time better spent with citizens or focused on the task at hand. And the quality of the data can be compromised when the relevant stakeholders can’t access or edit it in real-time.

There’s also the issue of knowledge and experience transfer as civil servants retire. For years, government employees relied on standard operating procedure documents. As a new generation of civil servants enters the workforce with different skill sets and technological expectations, how do you bridge this gap to facilitate knowledge transfer?

Microsoft Surface For Government

Flexible Work With The Microsoft Ecosystem

Government tools should enable faster access to data and secure information-sharing across agencies to improve mission outcomes, increase civic engagement, and accrue public trust in institutions. Implementing modern collaboration and communications capabilities can streamline how you coordinate efforts within and across agencies – so you can more impactfully deliver against your mission.

Confidence In Government With Better Security

Finding the balance between security and productivity is a critical task for government agencies. Proactive security measures help protect your agency from cyber attacks that can steal or destroy public, personnel, and mission-critical information. At the same time, easy data-sharing and efficient communications within and across agencies keep missions moving forward. With Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, you can enable more secure communication and collaboration across the entire family of Microsoft Surface devices.

Microsoft Surface In Government In Action

Over the past decade, the City of Frisco, Texas, has transformed its digital approach from a disjointed set of products to a flexible, standardised infrastructure built around Azure, Microsoft 365, and Windows 10 that streamlines communication, encourages collaboration and simplifies training and maintenance. Today, the city relies on an integrated suite of solutions like SharePoint, OneDrive, Windows Defender, and more to help different departments – from police to public works – deliver vital community services to residents. This is made possible by the distribution of Microsoft Surface devices. From the highly mobile, easy-to-carry Surface Pro 7+ to the digital whiteboard, Surface Hub 2S.

Microsoft Surface For Government

The Problem

When the COVID-19 health crisis disrupted traditional workflows and communications by suddenly forcing many workers out of the office last year, the City of Frisco, Texas, was well-positioned to quickly adapt to this change. After over a decade of strategic and methodical planning, Frisco had already put in place a robust and standardised technology infrastructure built on a foundation of Microsoft solutions, of which the surface family of devices are an integral part.

This initiative, led by Curt Balogh, Chief Information Officer, and Steve Leblond, Enterprise Technology Officer, first began to take shape as far back as 2002, when the City of Frisco was on the precipice of a significant growth cycle.

“We knew that we’d be hiring a lot of technical folks because we had a very small staff back then, and I knew that I would struggle to hire personnel,” he says. To cope with the impending staff deficit, Balogh decided to standardise all operating systems, networking technology, and other devices on Microsoft solutions to make training readily available. “Standardising on a path was a philosophical decision that we made at the very beginning of creating an IT department,” he says.

Since making these early decisions, Balogh and Leblond have addressed the challenges of continual growth by further consolidating the city’s technological and digital infrastructures within the Microsoft ecosystem. Currently, the Frisco government operates with the help of multiple Microsoft solutions, including the Microsoft 365 platform, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Azure. This has allowed them to better promote cross-departmental collaboration, increase flexibility and scalability, and bolster security, turning the City of Frisco into a model of digital transformation in local government.

The Solution: Microsoft Surface In Government

As part of a city government with numerous departments, each of which helps oversee the needs of more than 211,000 residents, Leblond and Balogh recognise that collaboration has to be at the heart of the city’s workplace culture. To this end, their team has helped incorporate Microsoft Surface for government use in the city’s workspaces and meeting rooms. Other solutions, such as the city’s investment in the Microsoft 365 platform, have helped further streamline the city’s workflows by giving employees additional sharing and collaboration capabilities.

The Evolution Of Computer Science With Microsoft Surface

Recent advances in machine learning have stimulated widespread interest within the Information Technology sector in integrating AI capabilities into software and services. Though the world of computer science has advanced tenfold over the past decade, there is still a lack of development skills and interest in this field, predominantly in the younger generation. Because of this gap in interest and capability, Microsoft has spearheaded a campaign to bring computer science to schools. In this article, we will take a look at Microsoft Surface for computer science and what has been done to excite the younger generation to get involved and build a brighter future together.

Microsoft Surface For Computer Science: The Approach

Microsoft partners globally with nonprofits, governments, educators, and businesses to ensure all youth have access to digital skills training and inclusive computer science education. Through cash grants, technology, and resources, Surface support nonprofits like Code.org and programs like Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools), to increase the capacity of organisations to develop and grow high-quality computer science programs.

Advocate For Change

Limited access to digital skills threatens to widen the income gap between those who have the skills to succeed in the 21st century and those who do not. To reduce the gap, all young people need the opportunity to learn computer science, especially those least likely to have access.

  • More jobs than graduates: In 2016, there were 530,472 open computing jobs in the United States but only 42,969 computer science graduates to fill.
  • Greater economic opportunity: Computer science majors can earn 40 percent more than the average college graduate, according to an economic analysis completed by The Hamilton Project.
  • Closing the gender gap: Only 22 percent of students who take the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science exam are female, the largest gender gap of any AP exam. However, females who take AP Computer Science are 10 times more likely to major in it in college.
  • Increasing access to AP exams: Recent studies revealed that only 18 percent of schools accredited to offer Advanced Placement (AP) exams offer the AP Computer Science exam, with the most economically disadvantaged students least likely to have access.
  • Shrinking the digital divide: According to results from a Google and Gallup study, principals in rural and small town schools say the biggest obstacles to increasing access to K-12 CS are the lack of teachers with the necessary skills and funding to prepare or hire teachers.

Self-Efficiency & Computer Science

According to a study done by Rachel S. Phillips, PhD and Benjamin PC Brooks, assessing whether or not students’ attitudes towards and self-efficacy with computer science changed after engaging with an Hour of Code activity. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Findings show that after completing one Hour of Code activity, students’ positive attitudes towards computer science increase along with feelings of computer science self-efficacy, especially for female students. In other words, after just one Hour of Code activity, students report liking computer science more and report feeling that they are better able to learn computer science and are better at computer science than their peers. These findings suggest that using particular activities in the right context can produce large changes in attitudes towards and self-efficacy with computer science.

Surface Technology For Modern Workers: Proven Productivity & Efficiency

Microsoft commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a Total Economic Impact (TEI) study to examine the financial impact and potential return on investment (ROI) companies may realise by implementing Microsoft 365 for Enterprise on Microsoft Surface devices. The study looks closely at how Surface devices augment and compound the business benefits of Microsoft 365, a well-known and trusted suite of applications for most of your office needs.

The Forrester Consulting TEI study found that by switching to Surface devices, end users become more productive due to simplified collaboration and device interfaces. Surface technology for modern workers realised benefits to IT efficiency because of simplified device deployment and management, and gained overall business cost savings thanks to enhanced security, device consolidation, and unified endpoint management solutions for remote interactions with your organisation's centralised network, making it a sensible and effective solution for the rapid escalation in digital transformation IT departments across the globe have had to face.

Fast Configuration & Deployment

Microsoft Windows Autopilot has changed the way new devices get deployed. “Users simply take the device out of the box, turn it on and Windows Autopilot configures it from the cloud, making it business-ready quickly and easily, and you can keep track of the process while it's happening,” Kropf says.

Surface Technology For Modern Workers: Advanced Security

It’s more important than ever to protect your organisation’s endpoint devices, securing data and systems wherever they are. Surface technology for modern workers offers devices with proactive defences with security built-in and managed through the cloud wherever users decide to work. Security protections are built into every layer of a Surface device.

Factory-Enabled Advanced Windows Security For Microsoft Surface

For a detailed description of the various security measures implemented by Microsoft mentioned here, please refer to articles on the Microsoft website on Microsoft Surface Security and Advanced Windows Security. The most recent research in cyber security indicates that as manufacturers build more protections into the OS and its connected services, other ways of exploiting device vulnerabilities are emerging at an alarming rate, with firmware emerging as a top target.

Because device firmware mostly involves third-party providers, keeping track of how secure firmware is, is becoming incredibly complicated. Since firmware is essentially embedded software that provides a low level of control for a device's specific hardware – a standard set of coded instructions that tells the device what to do, used in all kinds of consumer electronics to computers themselves – they are an ideal entry-point to a device's actual hardware for any attacker.

Since 2015, Microsoft has been using a unified approach to firmware protection and device security through complete end-to-end ownership of both the hardware design and firmware development, which is done in-house. No third parties are involved in the supply of firmware for Microsoft devices, and this approach has proven to be highly effective in minimising the risk of firmware vulnerability.

Surface Technology for Modern Workers

For the Surface family of devices, Microsoft's Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is maintained in-house, regularly updated through Windows Update, and seamlessly deployed for management through Windows Autopilot.

To summarise, Microsoft's approach to security for its Surface range includes:

  • Microsoft designed and built components
  • Factory level security protocols and inspection
  • No third-party BIOS vendors are involved in the development or production
  • Virtualisation-based security, or VBS
  • Hypervisor-enforced code integrity (HVCI)
  • Secure boot and boot guard
  • Malware protection
  • Dynamic Root of Trust Measurements (DRTM) in AMD devices
  • Remote device management control.

With these measures in place, users can have confidence that the privacy and confidentiality of their data will be protected and that their data will only be used in ways consistent with their needs and expectations.

Elegant & Practical Design That Is User-Friendly To The Max

Surface technology for modern workers consists of a very wide range of devices. Beginning in 2019, Microsoft has been introducing a rather extensive range of new devices in the Surface family, built for flexibility, portability, connectivity, and ease of group communications to meet the needs of the transformed business landscape. The range originally consisted of the Surface Laptop Go, released in October 2020, the Surface Laptop 4, released in April 2021, and the Surface Hub 2S, released in 2019.

IT Pro Resources For Microsoft Surface Go 2

As workers increasingly interact with workplace applications using mobile devices, tablets, or other mobile form factors, organisations face higher risks of these devices being lost, stolen, or temporarily misplaced.

Surface Go 2 devices can better protect their devices and data against attacks or accidents. With security capabilities built into the firmware, operating system, and Microsoft 365, Microsoft has taken a comprehensive chip-to-cloud approach to help organisations deliver more protection for employees using Surface devices with Microsoft 365.

In addition to the ways that Surface with Microsoft 365 can help keep frontline devices secure, with cloud management and Windows Autopilot, Surface Go 2 devices can also be shipped directly to a worker’s location without IT ever touching the device, saving time and effort. As frontline workers increasingly use devices in public spaces, the need to protect sensitive information at the front line has never been more important.

Windows Hello

Log in with a smile! Windows Hello is a biometrics-based technology that enables Windows 11 users to authenticate secure access to their devices, apps, online services and networks with just a fingerprint, iris scan or facial recognition. The sign-in mechanism is essentially an alternative to passwords and is widely considered to be a more user friendly, secure and reliable method to access critical devices, services and data than traditional logins using passwords.

Windows Hello limits the attack surface for Windows 11 by eliminating the need for passwords and other methods under which identities are more likely to be stolen. Windows Hello lets a user authenticate a Microsoft account or a non-Microsoft service that supports Fast Identity Online (FIDO) by having the user set up a gesture, such as a facial scan, iris scan or fingerprint to log into a device.

Safety and Security You Can Feel

2020 shaped up to be one of the most challenging years for digital transformation and the shift in how we do business. Remote working has become the norm, and with the excitement, it has opened the doors for cyber attackers.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 security features include a built-in firewall, an anti-malware solution, and automatic updates. This means you and your business will have access to the newest Teams and Office 365 security features on their Surface devices.

Business and IT leaders want to continue driving creative solutions forward to remain competitive while enabling a great employee experience. Organisations can save time and increase productivity, helping people move seamlessly between individual contributions and collaborative teamwork.

Cloud To Chip Security

Be reassured that updates are pushed out automatically to your organisation. The UEFI on Surface devices is developed and maintained proactively by Microsoft. In contrast to other Windows 10 devices available in the market today, the Surface Pro 7 provides IT admins with the ability to configure and manage firmware through a rich set of UEFI configuration settings. This provides a layer of hardware control on top of software-based policy management as implemented via mobile device management (MDM) policies, Configuration Manager or Group Policy. For example, organisations deploying devices in highly secure areas with sensitive information can prevent camera use by removing functionality at the hardware level. From a device standpoint, turning the camera off via a firmware setting is equivalent to physically removing the camera.

Device Management With Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Realise cost and time savings with a device portfolio that optimises Microsoft software in the environments your apps are deployed. Businesses that choose Surface and Microsoft 365 see real impact. According to a market study done by Microsoft, IT help desk call times decreased on average from 45 minutes to 15 minutes with Microsoft 365-powered Surface devices being deployed across departments. There have also been 3.5 hours saved thanks to automatic Windows update push patches to Surface devices powered by Microsoft 365. Everything Surface users are doing is faster.

Reducing Risk Costs

Organisations spend a lot of time thinking about reducing the cost of risk for their employees and business. Surface devices introduce a paradigm shift in which security is built into devices rather than added after the fact. With Surface, every layer (firmware, operating environment, and cloud management solutions) of the device is maintained by Microsoft with enterprise-grade security through Conditional Access, Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection, Windows Update for Business, Intune remote-wipe capabilities, Windows Defender Exploit Guard, and Microsoft Defender Application Guard.

The Forrester Consulting TEI study found that investments in Microsoft 365-powered Surface devices enhanced employee productivity, improved workforce collaboration and teamwork, increased security, and delivered more efficient device-related IT operations. With Microsoft 365, Windows Autopilot, and Microsoft Endpoint Manager (which includes Intune), Surface can unlock substantial time savings by automating the traditional run model, giving your IT pros more time to focus on the employee experience. And with a variety of form factors, Surface gives employees the flexibility to work the way they want and increases the potential for innovation.

Businesses that choose Surface gain more than just a device – they gain a strategic enabler for their success. Surface is designed by Microsoft for the Microsoft software people rely on every day. Integrating with existing software and cloud services, Surface extends coordinated security from device to cloud, enhances productivity and collaboration with natural user interfaces that optimise the in-app experience, and simplifies deployment and management – no matter where employees are working.

Teamwork Makes Dreamwork With Surface Hub 2S

When paired with the Steelcase Roam Mobile Stand and APC Charge Mobile Battery, Surface Hub 2S creates a mobile collaboration experience that frees teams from the conference room and allows your ideas to be as mobile as you are – no AC power connectivity required.

This device enables teams to work digitally all the way through their creative process, with access to the tools they rely on. Easily sign into your Office 365 account to access and interact with the content you need, run must-have Microsoft and business applications natively, and interact naturally with Surface Hub 2 Pen and touch. #AnythingButOrdinary

Across industries, the shift to remote and hybrid productivity was a tipping point to redefine the future of how we work, collaborate and learn outside physical office spaces or classrooms. We have seen a significant increase in the reliance on technology to keep organisations connected.

In the past year, Surface usage within enterprise organisations nearly doubled, driven by strong growth in the use of collaboration and productivity apps to maintain business continuity.

As a company, Microsoft is committed to designing technology that fosters productivity, creativity and connection to empower people to be successful wherever they work and learn in an office or classroom, or remotely. The Surface line of devices embraces just that.

For the latest and greatest Windows hardware on the market, look no further than Microsoft's Surface brand. Best known for innovative, tablet-like designs, Microsoft has expanded its Surface line over the years and now offers a full family of computers.

But with so many to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? Just like a hammer has a purpose in a toolbox, so does each Surface device. Whether you’re plotting and planning your latest campaign with your team in the boardroom or working remotely from a coffee shop, there is a solution for you.

Security, Wherever You Are, With Microsoft Surface

The adoption of mass remote working during the Coronavirus crisis has helped to keep workers safe but it has also introduced further security challenges for businesses. As a result, the extra hardware security enhancements packaged with the Microsoft Surface devices are sure to be welcomed by firms and employees alike.

Keep data secure from a Surface device’s first deployment to its last, no matter how many times and under what circumstances it changes hands.

  • Cloud-First Deployment and Management: Deploy and manage down to the firmware layer through the cloud with Microsoft Endpoint Manager13 and DFCI.6 Reduce IT complexity with Windows Autopilot.
  • Windows Virtual Desktop: Meet complex business and security requirements with broad device redirection support, endpoint protection and Microsoft 365 virtualised in Azure.
  • OneDrive for Business: Access and protect your business and school work with this intelligent files app. Share and collaborate from anywhere, on any device.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work better together. New integrations allow you to create shareable links, grant expiring access and follow configured policies.

Surface with Microsoft 365 provides unique protection at the front line. To provide a few illustrations of how devices may be vulnerable and how this new level of protection can support organisations and frontline workers. Here are a few commonplace examples:

Stolen Device

  • Data on the hard drive is encrypted. Surface devises ship with BitLocker drive encryption enabled by default, so the data on the hard drive cannot be accessed without credentials or the encryption key. Even if the hard drive is removed from the device and inserted into a new device, it cannot be decrypted.
  • USB booting is prevented because the organisation used Microsoft Endpoint Manager to proactively turn off the ability to boot from USB through the firmware-level control that the Surface device offers.
  • There is zero access to data even if the SSD is removed. If a Surface’s removable SSD is tampered with, the device will shut off power, erasing any residual data in its memory. Since the device is cloud-managed, the organisation can remote wipe all the machine’s contents.

Malicious Intent

  • A Zero Trust approach means that even if a device is authenticated, the current user profile can only access data and content they have permissions for. The retail establishment assumes that a breach is always possible and maintains strict controls over data access. Conditional access capabilities in Microsoft 365 prevent data leakage from both internal and external actors.
  • Any unusual behaviour on the device is automatically detected and remediated with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, which analyses signals from the device to recognise any abnormal behaviour, like an uncommon executable running on the device. As part of the remediation path, the device is automatically quarantined from the network until the situation is resolved.

Unsecured Network Connection

  • Instead of worrying about encrypting data that could be shared on a public network, the organisation takes a proactive approach to have a guaranteed secure connection, especially for employees in the field, by equipping frontline workers with LTE-enabled devices. The entire Surface 2-in-1 portfolio (Surface Go 2, Surface Pro 7+, Surface Pro X) has LTE available.
  • Any websites, cloud resources, or internal networks not explicitly defined as “trusted” are contained with Microsoft Defender Application Guard. These untrusted sites or files are opened in a virtualised container – essentially a separate PC within the existing PC – to isolate those potentially harmful sites or files from the rest of the device.

IT Pro Resources For Microsoft Surface

As workers increasingly interact with workplace applications using mobile devices, tablets, or other mobile form factors, organisations face higher risks of these devices being lost, stolen, or temporarily misplaced.

Surface devices can better protect their devices and data against attacks or accidents. With security capabilities built into the firmware, operating system, and Microsoft 365, Microsoft has taken a comprehensive chip-to-cloud approach to help organisations deliver more protection for employees using Surface devices with Microsoft 365.

In addition to the ways that Surface with Microsoft 365 can help keep frontline devices secure, with cloud management and Windows Autopilot, Surface devices can also be shipped directly to a worker’s location without IT ever touching the device, saving time and effort. As frontline workers increasingly use devices in public spaces, the need to protect sensitive information at the front line has never been more important.

Easy Deployment Of Microsoft Surface Devices Across Your Workforce

Do more with less – fewer resources, less complexity, less associated risk. Improve IT efficiency and reduce costs with remote Surface device deployment and management. Realise cost and time savings with a device portfolio that optimises Microsoft software in the environments your apps are deployed. Businesses that choose Surface and Microsoft 365 E5 see real impact.

  • 4 hours saved for each device deployed: With Microsoft Autopilot and Microsoft Endpoint Manager, which includes Intune, IT departments saw cost and time savings with Surface device deployments.
  • 67% reduction in help desk support calls: IT help desk call times decreased on average from 45 minutes to 15 minutes with Microsoft 365-powered Surface device deployments.
  • 25 hours saved deploying updates on Surface: Reduced challenges when Windows Update pushes patches to Surface devices powered by Microsoft 365.

Windows Autopilot & Microsoft Surface Devices

Windows Autopilot is a cloud-based deployment technology in Windows 10. You can use Windows Autopilot to remotely deploy and configure devices in a zero-touch process right out of the box.

Traditionally, IT pros spend a lot of time building and customising images that will later be deployed to devices that already come with a perfectly good OS already installed on them. Windows Autopilot introduces a new zero-touch deployment approach using a collection of technologies to set up and configure Windows devices. This enables an IT department to configure/customise images with little to no infrastructure to manage and a process that is easy and simple. From the user’s perspective, it only takes a few simple steps to get Surface to a productive state. In fact, the only interaction required from the end-user is to connect to a network and verify their credentials. Everything after that is fully automated.

Windows Autopilot allows you to:

  • Automatically join devices to Azure Active Directory (Azure AD).
  • Auto-enroll devices into MDM services, such as Microsoft Intune (requires an Azure AD Premium subscription).
  • Restrict the Administrator account creation. Autopilot is the only way to have the first person who logs into Windows enter as a standard user.
  • Create and auto-assign devices to configuration groups based on device profiles.
  • Customise OOBE (Out of Box Experience) content and branding to meet organisational requirements.
  • Enable full device configuration with Intune.
  • Reset or restart devices remotely.

The Surface Laptop 4 lets you multitask and get more done with the latest Intel® 11th generation processors.

Surface Pro 7+

Staying Connected

Play Around

The most obvious difference between Macs and Microsoft devices is their interfaces and operating systems. Below are some tips on navigating and using different features with a Surface device:

Navigation

You'll find all your folders, apps and settings by clicking on the Start menu located on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Search

Windows 11 makes it easy to find files, folders, apps and settings by simply typing in what you're looking for in the Search bar located in the centre of the screen. It functions just like the Spotlight utility on a Mac by finding the best match for your keywords.

Window Management

The minimise, resize and close window buttons are located on the top right corner of each window, whereas you'll find them on the top left on a Mac. Note that closing a window on a PC also closes the app, unlike on a Mac, which requires you to actually "quit" an app to shut it down.

Move Your Data When Switching From Mac to Microsoft

Whenever switching to a new device – especially if it’s from different manufacturers – figuring out how to move your data over is always a problem. Here are some tips to help you migrate data from your Mac to your Surface device without breaking a sweat:

Files

Use an external hard drive, USB flash drive or cloud storage service, such as Google Drive and Dropbox. Backup files on your Mac and then move them over to your PC.

Photos and Videos

iCloud for Windows will let you download photos and videos that you've backed up in iCloud.

Music and Movies

Once set up with your Apple ID, iTunes for Windows will let you listen to music, watch movies and download anything you've purchased from the iTunes Store on your PC.

Apple Mail

Windows doesn't have an equivalent file format to Apple Mail emails, so exporting your accounts won't help. To transfer your emails, check out apps like Emailchemy, which converts Apple Mail to Windows and Outlook-friendly formats.

Calendar

Open the Calendars app. Click File and Export.

Contacts

Open the Contacts app. Click on File and choose Export. You can also open your contacts via the iCloud website. Select the contacts you want to keep, click the cog button and choose Export vCard.

Fall In Love With It When Switching From Mac to Microsoft

When Microsoft launched the first operating system in 1980, the way the world conducts business changed. Now, the most-trusted software company is doing it again with its incredibly powerful and integrated line of Surface devices.

Since Microsoft introduced the hybrid tablet system known as Surface to the market, airlines began adopting these 2-in-1 devices as part of their flight bags, educational institutions started adding the tablets to their hardware review processes, and banks have armed their employees with Surface devices to be productive and highly mobile while centrally managing all aspects of customer information.

Surface allows businesses to thrive in a hyper-connected world. As true hybrid devices they offer the mobility and interactive features of a tablet with the processing power of a laptop. This allows institutions to easily deploy Microsoft Surface across their work fleet while curbing unnecessary downtime thanks to its integration into the rest of the Windows ecosystem.

As a company, Microsoft is committed to designing technology that fosters productivity, creativity and connection to empower people to be successful wherever they work and learn in an office or classroom, or remotely. The Surface line of devices embrace just that.
