How to Speed Up Your Old Laptop, While You Wait for a Newer Model to Hit our Shores

February 22, 20210

When COVID-19 sent much of the world into lockdown, lounges kitchens and bedrooms became our new offices. That has come with its own set of challenges, as workers have to deal with the demands of family and other distractions.

But under Lockdown, something else has happened too: across the world, there are shortages of laptops, network components, servers and other devices that have enabled the sudden shift to remote work.

If you’re finding that your once reliable laptop is starting to feel a little slower, and no one seems to have what you want in stock there are a few things you can do to give your machine a boost.

Max out the RAM

One cost-effective way is to upgrade the machines random access memory (RAM), either by adding new memory modules to the existing ones, or replacing the old ones with a set of new modules which have bigger capacity. 4 GB is the minimum for most people, while 16GB allows you to leave the tasks you are working on up and running while you are doing other work.

Speed it up with SSD

Another highly effective solution is to install a solid-state drive (SSD), a new generation of storage devices that replaces hard disk drives (HDDs). The primary benefit of SSDs is speed. This means much faster boot times, quicker file transfers, and all-round enhanced performance. Your laptop will be more responsive, programs will launch quicker, and the machine will resume working from sleep mode nearly instantaneously

Depending on your storage needs, a 256GB SSD is a decent starting point. 512GB is a better choice, and 1TB is great. 2TB may be overkill.

Clean it up a bit

Other effective ways to speed up your machine include using Windows’built-in tool for cleaning up junk that accumulates over time, uninstalling programs that you don’t use, and deleting unnecessary files that may be clogging up the system. Keeping your software up to date is not only important for security, but it can boost performance too. Windows will automatically send you a notification when an update is available. Make sure you install it
